Presentation: MS4s: The Duality of Being the Regulated and the Regulator
Description: Municipal Separate Storm Sewer Systems (MS4s) receive runoff from residential areas, city parks, streets, industrial sites, commercial parking lots, and construction sites. The diversity of runoff into this integrated system can create challenges for improving or maintaining water quality in a stream, river or lake. MS4s are challenged with understanding all permitted discharges, illicit discharges, and unregulated runoff flowing into the infrastructure as well as achieving water quality goals derived by beneficial uses of receiving streams, permit conditions, and public perception. This course reviews how MS4 departments, inspectors, engineers, service centers, fire departments, and fleets are all affected by stormwater regulations. Let’s explore some types of programs that can be beneficial for improving understanding, compliance, and ultimately cleaner water!
